the classic - salesman sold a 4k 1901 with
a card reader and a printer. When confronted with the question of how do you
output the semi-compiled program before consolidation the answer was you print
it and punch out the cards by hand.We gave them a card punch and upgrade to 8k

Remarks
I think they just did payroll and PERT and scheduling and
accounting. Really, that's what most of the 1900s did simply because there was
no real-time facility to use them in things like process control or anything
where a sort of VME/K reaction was needed.(KC)

Remarks: In a building which was originally used for
ship fabrication, an office unit being built inside a very large shed. The system was for research only. Attached
to the computer was a large flatbed plotter, it dwarfed the whole of the
computer system. The installation of the plotter was rather novel in that the
original shed crane system was used to lower the plotter through the office
roof. (RB)

Customer’s business: Wholesaler for Co-ops
Applications:
Remarks: A very special feature for this 3A was the
Priority Interrupt Feature, which enable customer software to operate in
Executive Mode. This was to allow control of a rather unique peripheral.
The special ( only one ever made) was a warehouse
control unit, which totally controlled the picking of CWS food supplies from
the custom built racking system an loaded in large mobile trolleys for despatch
to CWS retail shops. The controller was designed and built in Crawley (can’t
remember name of company) where I spent some time with the 3A during
development. ICL took on the servicing of the unit.
The warehouse was designed to supply the smaller CWS
stores and with the introduction of supermarkets it became redundant. Due to
the design of the racking system which supported the rest of the building, the
building could not be used for any other purpose and was demolished. (RB)
What a
store needed one day was delivered the next day. I think the 1903A actually
drove some sort of pecking mechanism that shoved things off shelves into a
trolley, thence to the lorry. (KC)(JD)

Customer’s business:
Applications: Payment of Dentist Fees
Remarks: The DEB used 1900 computers to process the payment
of Dentists Fees, using information supplied on Patient Estimate Forms. The
suite of programs to do this were designed and written by an in-house team of
System Analysts and Programmers. The programs were written in 1900 Plan and
COBOL. The data input medium was paper tape, and a team of 240 data preparation
staff was employed to punch the Estimate Form information. Linotype-Paul
Limited supplied the data preparation equipment, this being equal numbers of
verifiers and perforators.
It is interesting to note that when the programs were
written, the programmers used the date format of DD/MM/YY in order to save two
characters capacity on every date stored. It was anticipated that the system
would be replaced well before 31st December 1999, nearly 30 years
hence. In fact the system was still operational in the 1990s and in 1996 much
effort had to be devoted to upgrading the dates to cope with Year 2000. (PG) Ref. 1900

establish a software development operation there to use it. Of course the
